Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about YouTim and each of its services. Got a question? The answer is probably here.

General questions

The essentials about YouTim, its price, your data and your devices.

What is YouTim?

YouTim is a free social network for groups. It gives a family, a group of friends, a club, a team, a flatshare or a condo one private space with all the practical tools they need — group chat, polls, a shared calendar, expense splitting, shared lists, a photo gallery, announcements and more.

Is YouTim really free?

Yes. YouTim is free to use, with no ads, no in-app purchases and no per-feature paywall. A generous storage quota is included at no cost.

Which devices can I use YouTim on?

YouTim works in any web browser and as native iOS and Android apps. Your group and its data stay in sync across all your devices.

How do I get started?

Create your group in a few seconds, turn on the services you need, and invite people by email. Your group is active instantly — no complicated setup.

Does everyone need to install the app?

No. You can invite members by email, and people without the app still receive notifications and a daily email recap so they can follow along. The full interactive experience is in the app or web app.

Is there a limit on the number of groups or members?

You can create several groups and invite as many members as you need. Each group can run multiple services at once, and you can even run several instances of the same service.

Which services (modules) are available?

Group chat, polls, shared calendar, budget and expense splitting, group fund (piggy bank), shared checklists, bring lists, photo gallery, documents, announcements, resource booking and travel itineraries. Turn on only the ones your group needs.

Can I add or remove services later?

Yes. You can add or remove services from a group at any time — same members, no reconfiguration. Every tool shares the same circle of people.

Is my data private and secure?

Every YouTim is private and invitation-only — no public profiles, no algorithm, no ads. Data is hosted in the EU, GDPR-compliant, and never sold.

How is YouTim different from WhatsApp or a spreadsheet?

WhatsApp handles chat but not polls, budgets, calendars or shared lists; a spreadsheet handles none of the communication. YouTim replaces that patchwork with one private space where every tool already shares the same members.

How do notifications work?

Members are notified in real time by push, or by a single daily email recap — each person chooses their channel and frequency, so no one is overwhelmed.

In which languages is YouTim available?

YouTim is available in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish, both in the app and on this website.

Questions by service

Details on each of YouTim's 12 services — pricing, permissions, privacy and how it works.

Chat

Is YouTim Chat really free?

Yes, completely free, no subscription or in-app purchases, no hidden premium tier. Free on iOS, Android and web.

Are my messages private?

Your conversations are visible only to invited people. No public profile, no search engine indexing, no data resale. YouTim is built in Europe and respects GDPR.

How is this different from a WhatsApp or Telegram group?

Unlike general messengers, YouTim bundles chat with other group tools — polls, calendar, budget, lists, photo gallery. Everything ties to the same members.

YouTim also cleanly separates each circle (family, friends, club) instead of merging everything in an endless conversation list.

How many people can join a chat?

No strict limit. YouTim Chat works for a 4-person family as well as for an association of dozens of members.

How do I react to a message with an emoji?

Long-press the message: a 6-emoji palette (👍 ❤️ 😂 😮 😢 🎉) opens instantly. One reaction per message, changeable anytime.

Do I need to download an app to use the chat?

No. YouTim Chat works directly in your web browser on desktop, tablet or mobile. Free native apps are available on iOS and Android for push notifications.

Can I share photos in the chat?

Yes. Take a photo or pick from your gallery, share directly in the chat. Photos stay private to the group.

How do notifications work?

Each member picks their preferred channel: mobile push, email, or both. Notifications arrive in real time.

Documents

Is the service free?

Yes, fully free up to 1 GB per member, no in-app purchase, no ads.

What file types are accepted?

Office documents (PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OpenDocument, RTF, TXT, CSV, Markdown), images (JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP, HEIC, BMP, TIFF, SVG), audio (MP3, M4A, WAV, OGG, AAC, FLAC), videos (MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, AVI), unencrypted archives (ZIP, 7Z, TAR, GZ).

Executables and scripts are rejected (.exe, .bat, .sh, .js, .apk, etc.) — that's our first line of defence.

Is there an antivirus?

Yes. Every uploaded file passes through ClamAV before being visible to other members. Signatures are updated daily. An infected file is blocked and deleted; the uploader gets a notification.

Where are my files stored?

On Scaleway Object Storage in Paris, a French hosting provider in the European Union. Encrypted at rest, access only via signed URLs with short expiration. Files never transit through our backend — everything goes directly client ↔ Scaleway.

How much storage do I get?

1 GB per member, shared across all your YouTims. If you're in 3 YouTims, that's 1 GB total across them, not 3 GB.

What's the maximum file size?

  • Audio: 50 MB
  • Videos: 100 MB

Who can upload / delete?

By default, all members can upload. The admin can restrict it to themselves. Deletion of a document is allowed for its uploader or the admin.

Are my documents private?

Yes — only members of the YouTim can access them. Download URLs are signed and expire after 5 minutes. Nobody else, not even Scaleway without backend access, can download a document.
